Healthcare Enterprise Solution Architecture & Implementation
Business Problem
Lumenos is a health care company in the emerging space of consumer-driven health insurance. They needed the ability to interconnect various disparate business systems (Insurance Claims System, Siebel CRM, Web, Finance, Reporting, etc.) throughout their enterprise. Carnegie Technology Group was to provide the technical project management, business analysis, application architecture, and development capability; and would work in coordination with the internal project managers from the Claims, CRM, Finance, Reporting, and Web teams.
Solution
The resulting middleware was called the Unified Data System (UDS). Central to the UDS was a well-defined API, which was utilized by the enterprise systems to call functionality that would move data between systems. The core database system was Oracle on Sun Solaris and most of the API was created using Oracle PL/SQL. Key features included:
- Propagation of customer benefit plan and detailed claims information to the Web for online viewing. Microsoft-based web content management system utilized .asp pages calling the API functions through a thin COM layer.
- Automated load of eligibility data into the production system with logic to match, validate, and dedupe. Data loading and cleansing was performed using Perl and Oracle Pure Integrate.
- Automated creation of secure website logins for eligible members, using Oracle Internet Directory (LDAP) and a sophisticated two-firewall security mechanism to prevent access to sensitive data. A set of intranet-based customer service tools have also been deployed to allow customer service representatives to unlock locked accounts, reset passwords, create dependent accounts, etc.
- Integration with Siebel CRM system through the Siebel Integration Manager.
Benefits
With the UDS in place, Lumenos now has a solid, yet flexible, middleware system that facilitates data flow and unifies the collaborative operation of its enterprise applications. They have been able to reduce technology expenses through automated interfaces that provide the necessary mappings between disparate datasets. Through the implementation of the UDS, Lumenos has been able to significantly decrease intra-system synchronization issues. Further, all of the complex business logic that the UDS system required resided within a well-defined and centralized enterprise-accessible API. All these benefits translated to substantial measurable ROI for Lumenos.
